Oh yes. It is that time. The time that my babies have went from looking at me as someone who has rocked, huggged, kissed, groomed, and played with to being this really MEAN person who has taken away the ONE thing that brought so much comfort to them. THE MILK BAR
I am sure they want to know what the h**l am I thinking.
They have been good babies and do not deserve this kind of treatment. I mean, they have dealt with the little annoying things along the way like hoof trims, wormings, and shots. And even the annoyance of having this alien thing put on their head with a rope attached to it, and being taught that they must just follow along and not fight.
But THIS? This is just not right. Why was it ok one minute to be with their mom and have warm milk any time day or night, and the next minute WHAM they are told "no more"
Why would I want to be so mean?
Well let me tell ya. I think it is just as hard on me as it is on them.
Ok let me take you thru the events of the last 24 hrs. I hadnt wanted to wean them until moms were checked for preg because I didnt want the mares stressed while trying to get bred.Yesterday the tests were done so the time had come. I put Cassi and Mariah together in one stall so they could comfort each other. Well that lasted maybe 45 minutes when Mariah a.k.a. THE BRAT, got her belly full and decided that it was time to pick on Cassi. Now this is something that she has learned to do real well to everyone and which is how shes earned her alias. Well Cassi is not to overly upset about mom being on the other side of the wall but still is annoyed that she cant just take a drink whenever she feels the urge.So when Mariah has decided it is time to pester her friend, Cassi was not in the mood. So she let her have it. She charged her trying to bite her and then swung around and commenced to kicking. Mark ran out to rescue the little trouble maker with me close behind. So then I decided that maybe it be best to just take Cassi out and put her with her sister Shayla. She wouldnt be able to push Shayla around like that. So then I thought, why not put Angel in with Mariah? They get along real well outside and play good together. And besides Angel is such a sweetie that she wont hurt the baby. :)WRONG. All was going great until Angel filled her belly and wanted a nap. Thats when things took a drastic turn Mariah decided this would be a great time to pick on her. Well Angel got mad stood up and went after her too. So another trip to the barn. I figured I might as well put Mariah back in with mom for the night cuz no one else wanted to put up with her. lol
So she got her way. She had full access to that nice udder of warm milk.(sigh)
Meanwhile Cassi and Shayla are dealing with being roommates and getting along good.
So today was a new day. I had things I had to do in town so Mark put everyone out. He put the moms in one pen and the rest of the girls out back in the other one. About 4 hrs later he calls and asked if I was on my way home. He didnt want to leave until I was home because the little darling Mariah was so upset. She was out there crying and running and bucking. I got home and went out and talked to her but she only had one thing on her mind. I WANT MY MOMMY. So I hugged her and kissed her little nose and told her it would all be ok and went in the house. I watched her for a couple of hours on the cams and just couldnt take it. I went out and put her back in with her mom. lol Yeah call me a softee. I figure that she just isnt ready yet and its not like I have to wean her right away because shes not going anywhere. So she is a happy camper now being where she wants to be. Cassi is dealing with her seperation pretty well and I dont feel like such a bully now. All is right with the world. ;D
